Connections
Every class I make an effort to talk to students about how they are doing. This also includes weather they are excited/ready for Kung fu. If they start to say no, I try and boost their mood and try and get them excited for Kung fu. This could be giving me things to do in the warm-up(if I’m doing it) or just talking about fun things. And being really energetic about it. This helps me gauge how much I will push them in classes. For example if a student has been having a rough time I will still push them but I will add a larger amount of positive and reassuring feedback towards them. Not saying I don’t give positive comments to other; I just know when I struggle I value those little comments a LOT more then when I’m in a good mood. As well at the end of the class I make an effort to go to the students not in the best mood at the beginning of the class and check how they are feeling now that class was over, and ask if they were happy that they came. Sometimes they still feel down but the majority of the time I find that they are in a better mood and just genuinely happier. These little check in’s would mean a lot to me so I imagine that this at least has a positive impact on the students. It also makes a stronger connection between the students and me, leading me to be able to teach them and help them in Kung fu more.
Teaching has a great impact on my life as I get to connect and help improve people's lives (or I hope at least). I wouldn’t be the person I am today if I didn’t have Kung fu in my life. Kung fu has helped me shape who I am and will help me develop into who I want to be.
